چکیده

The main goal of this paper is to show that there is a natural flow from active perception through exploration of perceptual learning. We have attempted to conceptualize the perceptual process of an organism that has the top-level task of surviving in an unknown environment. During this conceptualization process, four necessary ingredients have emerged for either artificial or biological organisms. First, the sensory apparatus and processing of the organism must be active and flexible. Second, the organism must have exploratory capabilities. Third, the organism must be selective in its data acquisition process. Fourth, the organism must be able to learn. In the section on learning, we have clearly delineated the difference between what must be innate and what must be learned. In order to test our theory, we present the system's architecture that follows from the perceptual task decomposition. The predictions of this theory are that an artificial system can explore and learn about its environment modulo its sensors, manipulators, end effectors and exploratory procedures/ attribute extractors. It can describe its world with respect to the built-in alphabet, that is the set of perceptual primitives. Active Perception and Exploratory Robotics

Most past and present work in machine perception has involved extensive static analysis of passively sampled data. However, it should be axiomatic that perception is not passive, but active. Furthermore, most past and current robotics research use rather rigid assumptions, models about the world, objects and their relationships. It is not so difficult to see that these assumptions, most of the ...

Investigating the role of movement in the constitution of spatial perception using the Enactive Torch

This paper reports an exploratory study designed to clarify whether the Enactive Torch, a custom-built minimalist distance-to-tactile perceptual supplementation device, can be used to investigate the role of embodied action in the perception of external spatiality. By constraining the kind of exploratory movements available to the participants, we create an experimental setup in which it is pos...

Contact Force and Scanning Velocity during Active Roughness Perception

Haptic perception is bidirectionally related to exploratory movements, which means that exploration influences perception, but perception also influences exploration. We can optimize or change exploratory movements according to the perception and/or the task, consciously or unconsciously. This paper presents a psychophysical experiment on active roughness perception to investigate movement chan...

Development of Haptic Perception by Homogeneous Active Elements

When we move our fingers across the surface of objects, we can obtain tactile sensations of its shape, roughness and material and categorize these sensations into a perception of the object. The feelings of various objects can not be deduced from the instantaneous sensations of our fingers. These sensations exist inside the dynamics of our body and nervous system, that is affected by both the e...

Context-dependent changes in tactile perception during movement execution

Tactile perception is inhibited during movement execution, a phenomenon known as tactile suppression. Here, we investigated whether the type of movement determines whether or not this form of sensory suppression occurs. Participants performed simple reaching or exploratory movements. Tactile discrimination thresholds were calculated for vibratory stimuli delivered to participants' wrists while ...
